Nowadays the city attracts more than half a million foreign visitors every year, making this historic fishing village a preferred vacationing destination.
A charming fishing village on the Riviera Nayarit, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle has preserved its traditions despite the changes and progress that have occurred. One of the most noted changes being the new Marina Riviera Nayarit, a world class Marina constructed as a symbol of Mexico’s ancient relationship with the sea. Few coastal villages have been able to adapt their local businesses to a shifting economy in a way that encourages growth without losing sight of sustainability and preserving the magnetism that these small villages were founded on.
Just steps away from the development, you can walk downtown and enjoy La Cruz de Huanacaxtle’s cobblestone streets, where you will find gourmet restaurants, clubs, cafes and many places of interest this small town has to offer.
Banderas Bay is home to two of the most exclusive destinations on the Mexican Pacific: The Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta, both offering endless activities for all tastes and budgets:
La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is a fishermen village that is only waking up to the new times. Life here happens at its own pace, ruled by the cycles of nature. The town gets its name from a wooden cross that stands at the center of town, made of Huanacaxtle (Enterolobium cyclocarpum) wood, from a tree also known in the region as Parota. Legend has it that the cross was set on that spot by a mule driver, as a marker on his route.
In the village there are restaurants and small businesses selling staple goods. On Sundays, it is customary to visit the arts & crafts market by the Sea Market, which displays a rich variety of products that can be bought directly from the producer or artisan. Browsing along the stands is quite an experience!
La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is also home to modern Marina Riviera Nayarit, with capacity for over 350 vessels up to 400 feet in length. The marina offers services and facilities such as Yacht Club, specialty restaurant, fuel station, dry marina and shipyard.
It is thanks to the marina facilities that water related activities and sports can be easily accessed, such as sport fishing, sailing, windsurf and stand up paddle. The marina also houses the Sea
Market (Mercado del Mar), a space where La Cruz fishermen gather to sell their catch. Undoubtedly, here you can really buy the “catch of the day”, and hand-pick truly fresh fish that has just been landed off the fishing boats.
The Blue Flag is a voluntary eco-label awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) to beaches and marinas through strict criteria dealing with Water Quality, Environmental Education and Information, Environmental Management, Safety and Other Services.
You will leave the world behind, as if you were alone on a desert island, sheltered in a hidden refuge. And this is exactly what Punta de Mita is: an exclusive and luxurious getaway that rises from the peninsula that includes almost 10 kilometers (six miles) of virgin beaches, surrounded by green hills.
Here, the Pacific Ocean opens before those visitors who never seem to tire of admiring the endless turquoise-blue depths of the sea.
It is one of the most sophisticated and select destinations of the Riviera Nayarit.
Along the shores of the Corral del Risco and El Anclote beaches, which stretch for 500 meters (1,640 feet), luxurious hotels and resorts have been constructed, which offer all of the essential amenities to please even the most demanding travelers.
Along the Riviera Nayarit shoreline there are numerous quaint villages, among which San Pancho and Sayulita stand out:
San Francisco de Azapan, known today as San Francisco, or San Pancho, is a fishermen village that has experienced growth in a very singular way; a clear orientation towards educational, environmental and art-fostering projects can be perceived in town.
With an intense luminance, the beach of San Pancho welcomes both: those in search of rest and relaxation on the ocean shore with the bright sun and a good book, and those with adventurous spirits that defy the waves of the Pacific on their surfboards.
Culturally enrich your visit to the Riviera Nayarit with a stop in San Pancho. Appreciate the incredible Huichol-handicrafts, the art pieces on display in the galleries, the exclusivity of its polo club and the tranquility of this traditional fishing village that, with its spirit of community work, has managed to evolve while maintaining its time-honored essence.
To many it has come as a surprise to find out that Riviera Nayarit is blessed with many high quality break point surf locations and reef breaks that provide an amazing variety and a premier experience for beginners and pro surfers alike.
There are excellent surf "breaks" circling the Punta Mita southern peninsula alone, from Anclote to Sayulita, providing surfers of all skill levels with many options; from zippy reefs, to perfect point breaks and fun beach breaks. Other incredible surf breaks in Riviera Nayarit can be found up north in Chacala and San Blas.
Traditional short board surfing as well as longboard surfing and stand-up paddle surfing are all very popular. Surfing lessons are also available at very reasonable rates, and taught by many top surfers.
Few activities can compare with the luxury of the impressive golf courses in Riviera Nayarit, which has positioned itself as the best golf destination in Mexico and a favorite for golfers all over the world. The key to such success lies in the combination of having the wonderful beaches and the amazing tropical rainforests of the Sierra Madre Mountains as a backdrop, and the designs by renown golfing masters as Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Jim Lipe, Percy Clifford and Robert Von Hagge&Baril. Six world-class golf courses have established in the destination and there are three more in the pipeline. With such an amazing and unforgettable offering, it is only natural that Riviera Nayarit be a center of attraction for international golfers.
